Jack Christiaansen
School/Degree: University of Minnesota | Major in Mechanical Engineering

Internship: EarthScout – Field Service Intern
Jack is currently a senior at the University of Minnesota studying Mechanical Engineering. Outside of school and work, he enjoys being with friends, running (ran his most recent marathon last May!), playing guitar, and reading the Bible.
Why He Chose to Intern at EarthScout
Jack first discovered EarthScout while browsing Handshake, an online platform for internships and jobs. What immediately caught his attention was the positive feedback about the team and the company culture. During the interview process, he felt welcomed and appreciated the professionalism of everyone he met. This combination of a supportive team and a strong company reputation made him excited to join EarthScout as an intern.
How He Decided to Pursue This Field
Back in high school, Jack enjoyed subjects like math and physics, which naturally led him to explore engineering. Mechanical engineering stood out because it combines both areas and offers a wide range of career opportunities. Although Jack didn’t have a specific dream industry at the time, he appreciated that mechanical engineering provided flexibility and the chance to explore different opportunities within the field.
This Summer at EarthScout
This is Jack’s second year as an intern at EarthScout. He continues to find it both educational and enjoyable. The more he has learned about EarthScout, the more he realizes how unique the company truly is. He has developed a strong connection with his team, describing them as incredibly supportive and collaborative. One of the highlights of his internship is the hands-on nature of the work, which allows him to apply what he’s learning in real-time. Additionally, the opportunity to travel and engage directly with farmers adds a rewarding and dynamic element to his experience.
What He Enjoys Most About EarthScout
For Jack, the people at EarthScout are the best part. The team is fun, welcoming, and fosters an environment where everyone feels valued. Jack also feels fortunate to travel to various locations as part of his role, and he finds great satisfaction in knowing that the work he contributes has a meaningful impact on the company’s success and mission.
Career Goals and How the Internship Has Prepared Him
While he doesn’t have a rigid career plan, he aspires to secure an engineering position in any industry that aligns with his interests. This internship has been instrumental in teaching him essential communication skills, especially important given EarthScout’s remote-first work environment. Staying connected and maintaining clear communication with his team has become a vital part of his professional growth during this experience.
Favorite Projects He’s Working On

Currently, Jack is focused on updating firmware and swapping SIM cards on EarthScout equipment located throughout Minnesota (see the photo!). One of his favorite locations to work is a winery that uses a WeatherCub device. The scenic setting by the lake makes his job even more enjoyable and serves as a pleasant backdrop to his technical tasks.
Life After This Summer
After completing his internship, he plans to return to the University of Minnesota to continue his studies. He also intends to stay active in organizations like SALT and spend quality time with friends and family.
