Internship Area: Electrical Engineering Intern

Nick is from Minneapolis, Minnesota, and will be a senior at Colorado College in Colorado Springs. He plans to graduate in May 2026 with a degree in physics. Outside of school and work, Nick is an active member of his college tennis team and enjoys lifting, fishing, attending concerts, and listening to music—especially jazz, hip hop, and blues.

Thriving in a Culture of Drive and Innovation

One of the things that drew Nick to Design Ready Controls was their strong software background and innovative approach to technology. From the start, he says “I was impressed by the workplace environment—a place where people are driven, ambitious, and truly enthusiastic about what they do.” The team sets high expectations for both them and the company, which I find motivating and exciting. Being surrounded by such determination and forward-thinking energy makes every day both challenging and rewarding, and “I enjoy being part of a company that’s always striving for more.” Finally, Nick emphasized how great the culture and team are at Design Ready Controls. He added “across all teams, I have gotten to know different people, with diverse backgrounds and experience, and make connections and just learn from them. Everyone is so open to teaching and sharing their experiences.”

Troubleshooting and Teamwork: Keys to Success

Nick had a few things when I asked him about lessons learned. He started with, “one of the most important things I’ve learned at Design Ready Controls is the value of asking smart questions and developing strong troubleshooting skills early on.”  Nick added that because of their in-house software, it is important to identify and solve problems quickly and that all stems from asking good questions. Finally, Nick pointed out “collaboration also plays a huge role—on a team this large, tapping into the knowledge and experience of others is incredibly valuable.”

Embracing the Challenge: Journey into Engineering

Nick will tell you that engineering is a challenging field—but that knowledge only fueled his motivation to dive deeper and gain firsthand experience. He discovered his passion for engineering through the classes he took in school, which he thoroughly enjoyed. With a background in troubleshooting, Nick felt confident in his ability to take on the demands of the industry. Looking back, he considers pursuing a career in engineering to be the best decision he has made so far.

Looking Ahead

Nick will return to Colorado to complete his final year of undergraduate studies. After graduation, he is considering pursuing a graduate degree in engineering, aiming to deepen his technical expertise and hopefully build on his experience at Design Ready Controls. Looking ahead, Nick is interested in working in the fields of sustainability—particularly agricultural technology—or environmental studies. With a strong passion for the outdoors, he is drawn to industries that make a positive impact on the community and the environment.
