Intern Spotlight: Jonathan Ip

Jonathan is a senior at the University of Minnesota, where he is studying Electrical Engineering. Outside of school, he enjoys playing ultimate frisbee, rock climbing, skiing, and running. If given the opportunity to travel anywhere in the world for skiing, he would choose Banff, Canada.
A Strong First Impression
Jonathan was interested in Design Ready Controls from the beginning. He was drawn to the opportunity to apply his coding skills in a hands-on environment, as well as the chance to contribute to meaningful work. He was also drawn to the company’s close-knit culture and the growth opportunities it offers interns.
Values That Align
One aspect Jonathan appreciates most about Design Ready Controls is the culture, particularly the company’s core value of integrity. Jonathan states, “It’s not only a company value, it’s a personal value. I find it very important to stay true to myself.” He recognized similarities between his own values and those of the company, which helped reinforce his interest in the internship.
Learning by Doing
Jonathan is currently working on projects that include fixing repositories for the company. He enjoys contributing to the organization of the company’s infrastructure and values the opportunity to learn through direct experience. So far, one of the key lessons he has taken from the internship is the importance of staying proactive and taking initiative. Jonathan views the internship as an opportunity for self-growth and believes that the effort he puts in directly shapes what he gains from the experience.
A Field That Feels Like Magic
Jonathan was initially drawn to Electrical Engineering because of its versatility and presence in everyday life. He enjoys the complexity and practicality of the field, explaining, “It’s cool what you can do with it, you are controlling things that you cannot see, it is like magic.” That sense of innovation and discovery continues to inspire him as he develops his skills.
Support From the Team
Throughout his internship, Jonathan has had the opportunity to work with Electrical Engineering Supervisor Samantha Qaddoum. He enjoys working with Sami and the team, saying, “they’re all really nice people who are always willing to answer my questions.” Jonathan has appreciated the support and guidance of his team and values the experience of contributing in a role that continues to challenge and engage him.
Looking Toward the Future
As his path continues, Jonathan plans to pursue his master’s degree. In addition, Jonathan will continue to serve as a teaching assistant for Analog Electronics and work on his research project at school.
