Internship: Learning and Development Intern
Jaimie is from Apple Valley, Minnesota, and recently graduated from the University of Minnesota with degrees in Psychology and Human Resources Development. Outside of school and work, she enjoys running, going for walks, spending time with friends and her dogs, Rocky, and Olive, and watching thriller movies.
Learning and Development at Design Ready Controls
When Jaimie began searching for a Learning & Development (L&D) role, she was not sure where her journey would take her—she discovered the opportunity at Design Ready Controls by Googling. The interview experience left a strong impression; the HR team seemed genuinely focused on L&D and enthusiastic about ongoing education. “I could sense the team’s passion for ongoing education,” she recalls. It was clear to her that the company valued employee learning and offered real opportunities for cross-departmental training.
Knowing she wanted a career in L&D, she believed that “employees make up the heart of any organization.” She was especially drawn to companies that prioritize employee wellbeing and are committed to continuous improvement. With a background in being a teaching assistant, a role in L&D was a natural fit. What stood out most during the interview process was how kind and welcoming everyone was. “It felt like a place where I could thrive and help others learn,” she reflected.
A Culture of Kindness and Care
After reflecting on what she enjoys most about working at Design Ready Controls, Jaimie’s answer was clear—the people. She shared, “Everyone has been kind and open to helping and getting to know me.” While her area and department tend to be more introverted, she has found that people still enjoy interacting. In addition, Jaimie mentioned that she “feels at home” when asking questions, which has made her experience even more positive. She appreciates how Design Ready Controls cares for its employees—a quality that was at the top of her list when searching for the right company to join.
Building a Career Around Employee Wellbeing
Jaimie’s main goal was to join a company that truly prioritizes employee wellbeing, “I believe everyone should enjoy their work and look forward to coming in each day.” Her internship is providing valuable preparation by allowing her to gain exposure to different departments and functions within the organization. While she is currently focused on content creation, she will also be working on projects that involve talking with various leaders to understand their needs. This hands-on experience is helping her develop a well-rounded perspective and equipping her with the tools to support both employees and the organization.
Building Tailored Training Programs for Success
Currently, Jaimie is dedicating much of her time to developing micro-trainings on a variety of topics. She enjoys this work, as it closely aligns with the coursework she completed at the University of Minnesota. In the coming weeks, Jaimie will be meeting with each department to learn more about their specific training needs, designing customized content, and leading these training sessions.
Looking Ahead
Jaimie’s plan is to pursue a career in learning and development, though she is keeping an open mind about her next steps after her internship. Thanks to her experience at Design Ready Controls, she now has a clearer understanding of the type of company culture she values and the environment where she wants to work. As her internship wraps up, Jaimie will begin applying for full-time positions in the Twin Cities, eager to build on the skills and insights she has gained during her time at Design Ready Controls.
