Alli at her desk

Alli is from Albert Lea, Minnesota, and recently graduated from the University of St. Thomas with a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics, along with minors in Spanish and Statistics. Outside of school and work, she enjoys reading fiction, playing pickleball, going for walks, and spending quality time with her family.

Drawn to Data: Finding My Place at Design Ready Controls

Growing up in Albert Lea, Alli says “I heard about the facility being developed in our city and was excited about it because it was new and different.” Curious, she started researching the company and was immediately drawn in by the phrase “data driven” on the website. The emphasis on data as a core value sparked her interest and helped her realize this was a place where her skills and passion could truly make a difference. She chose to intern at Design Ready Controls because she enjoys working on the back end – where she can focus on finding efficient solutions to make other people’s jobs easier.

Lessons From the First Few Months

Throughout the first few months of Alli’s role, she has learned the importance of being independent and confident sharing her ideas, knowing her supervisor values everyone’s insight. She has embraced the mindset that no question is a dumb question and believes it is important to always stay curious about the work you are doing—there is always more to learn. By keeping an open mind and diving deep into every task, she has discovered that the best growth happens when you are willing to explore, ask questions, and go beyond the basics.

Culture of Collaboration

Alli deeply appreciates the culture and environment at Design Ready Controls. She describes Design Ready Controls as “a very collaborative company,” and says the most amazing part is that “if you get stuck on anything, anyone is happy to help.” On her first day, Alli knew she had the skills needed for the role, but she had never used the software before. Thanks to the patience and understanding of her supervisors, she has never felt lost—they make sure she has the support needed to succeed.

Highlights of her Role

A few things stand out to Alli when she reflects on her favorite parts of the internship. One highlight is the opportunity to work on the floor displays, which show weekly targets for panels in production. Alli says “this is especially rewarding because it has an immediate, visible impact on the production floor.” Alli also enjoys using Power BI to build reports that allow supervisors or managers to track performance and make data-driven decisions. She likes using this tool to compare productivity across different Design Ready Controls facilities, helping teams see how they are performing and identify areas for improvement.

Looking Forward

After completing this internship, Alli plans to begin her search for a full-time job in the data analytics field in the Twin Cities. Reflecting on her experience, Alli shares, “Through this internship, I learned many different programs and languages that will prepare me for any industry I go into. I am still exploring my options, but this internship sparked a real passion for data analytics and has prepared me so much for my future career.”
